This too shall pass

“This too shall pass,” is a phrase that is often attributed to King Solomon. In a parable, King Solomon requests that his most trusted minister find a ring that has magic powers. "If a happy man looks at it, he becomes sad, and if a sad man looks at it, he becomes happy."  To everyone’s surprise, the minister returned, six months later, with a plain gold band engraved with three Hebrew letters which read, "This too shall pass."

There is much to learn about navigating and enjoying the rural environment I now call “home.” During the summer months, horses, barns, grain silos, and fields of corn line my daily walking route. Fall arrives with a flurry of spectacularly colorful, then falling, leaves; winter brings lots of snow to plough, shovel and blow, followed by glorious spring.

Recently, this “city girl” was deeply affected by a hunter who became irate after being told not to hunt in our neck of the woods. I’m not being judgmental about this sport, however, I view our property as a sanctuary for the many deer, wild turkey, rabbits--even coyote--that feel free to roam. After spending months eating the apples that fall from the trees and drinking water from the creek that flows throughout, they, no doubt, have their defenses down and are not fair game.

And, so it is that there are seasons to hunt, ski, swim, root for the Buffalo Bills, and plant tulips.
