If you grew up in the north during the 1950’s and ‘60’s you suffered
much less sun damage than I did as a child growing up in Miami
Beach. While your skin was covered by warm clothing, mine was
constantly exposed to the bright, tropical sun. We were not informed
about the damaging rays of the sun and northern visitors with painful
sunburns were an all too common site.
A suntan is really an injury to your epidermis, the top layer of your
skin. The production of melanin, your skin’s pigment, is increased to
prevent further injury to your skin’s deeper layers. Although your
suntan fades in a few days, the damage remains, and is cumulative,
causing premature aging of the skin and DNA changes that can lead
to skin cancer.
It is important to apply a good sunscreen year-round to your face,
neck, hands and other exposed body parts. If you apply cosmetic products to your face, the sunscreen should be applied on top of your moisturizer and under your foundation or other make-up. Check out Coolibar clothing with the sun protection built right in: UPF 50+. I love it!
